peace. joy. love. ice cream

These are not tomatoes.  I learned that right away after slicing one like a tomato for my egg salad sandwich last week.  These are persimmons.  Duh. In an effort to use everything out of my new organic delivery service I had to find a way to use them.

Enter cake.  Found via the internet of course. For me it was lacking. It didn't rise so much.  I'm wondering if I copied the recipe down correctly. Now I was fearing not only the persimmons going to waste but all the other ingredients I added too.

Enter ice cream.  I called Big Daddy who was away watching our soccer team lose with some friends.  Please stop and buy Breyers French Vanilla Natural Ice Cream on your way home.  I must give him explicit instructions or he will come home with some high fructose corn syrup conocotion which will drive me nuts.

He did good.  But, the kids only ate the ice cream.  And, now the chickens are eating the leftover cake.  I think I will pass on the persimmons next time.

Don't be disappointed. It's a learning experience. If you hadn't tried, how would you ever know. Me? I don't think I've ever had a persimmon.

an admirable effort :)
at least you tried! do they taste like tomatoes? and i have to give pants explicit instructions at the grocery store, too!

that's very unfair to your hens. i bet they loved the cake.and as they can't speak, i decided to stand up in their defense.
"give us cake more often!!"

I love persimmons...and just took some photos of them, too, that I'm going to share later today! If you get them again, don't give up. Peel them, slice them into bite-size chunks and squeeze some lime juice over them. SO GOOD!!!

um, seriously, that's a persimmon cake? i need to know how you made it. my parents have a persimmon tree and cannot eat them fast enough so recipes for how to use them would help a lot!

Hello! Thanks so much for the comment. I love to hear from understanding people. I have never in my life had a persimmon...but now I want to try one. I wonder if my boys would only eat the ice cream too.....?

That's neat you baked them in a cake!

I just tried my first one a few days ago, and I was eating them in front of Koreans, so I had to eat a whole piece! I don't think I could ever eat them alone..I think I could blend them in a fruit smoothie perhaps!!

Cute story.

Around here Persimmons make delightful, moist cakey cookies! I don't have a personal recipe, but I've eaten some yummy ones.

dont feel bad. at least you learned something in the experience. Plus, nothing can be bad when topped by ice cream

This makes me LOL. We've had similar progressions at our house too. I wouldn't have the faintest idea of that to do with a persimmon. Never had one before? Valiant effort...!

It's the only vanilla ice cream I buy...it's amazing when you start reading the ingredients in the other ice cream...

I think the cake looked good...

but I'm always hungry for something sweet....

Persimmons are delicious just by themselves as a fruit, as long as they are fully ripe, ie soft to touch. Scoop straight from the skin with a teaspoon.
